Why Bites Go Bad Faster in Vietnam
At home, a scratched mosquito bite usually heals without drama. In central Vietnam it's a different equation. Air temperatures around 30–35°C and humidity above 80% keep your skin permanently warm and damp — ideal growing conditions for the Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria that live on everyone's skin. Add sweat, sunscreen, sea water and the bacteria under your fingernails, and one good scratching session can turn a harmless bump into an infected sore in 24–48 hours.
Travellers are also bitten more than locals: mosquitoes are drawn to new odours, and visitors spend more time outdoors at dawn and dusk. The result is that infected bites are one of the most common reasons tourists in Da Nang and Hoi An end up needing a doctor mid-trip. The good news: almost all of it is preventable with a few cheap pharmacy items and some discipline about scratching.
Mosquito Bite Care: The First 24 Hours
The goal is simple — kill the itch so you don't break the skin.
- Don't scratch. This is the single rule that matters most. Scratching feels good for ten seconds and opens the door to bacteria. If a bite has already been scratched raw, treat it as a small wound: wash with soap and water, apply antiseptic, cover it.
- Cold compress. Hold something cold (a wrapped ice cube, a chilled water bottle from any convenience store) on the bite for 10 minutes. Cold shrinks the swelling and numbs the itch.
- Antihistamine tablet. Ask any pharmacy ("Nha Thuoc") for cetirizine — one tablet once daily calms the histamine reaction driving the itch. It's cheap, non-drowsy for most people, and sold without prescription.
- Hydrocortisone cream. A thin layer of 1% hydrocortisone on the bite, twice daily for a few days, settles the local inflammation. Also over the counter in Vietnam.
- Keep it dry. After swimming or showering, pat bites dry rather than rubbing. Damp, macerated skin breaks more easily.
With this routine, most bites flatten within two to three days. What you're watching for is the bite that doesn't follow that script.
When a Bite Becomes an Infection
A normal bite is an itchy, coin-sized bump that peaks in a day and fades. An infected bite behaves differently. See a doctor if you notice:
- Expanding redness — the red area keeps growing after 48 hours instead of shrinking
- Warmth — the skin around the bite feels distinctly hotter than the skin next to it
- Pus — yellow or green discharge, or a honey-coloured crust (a sign of impetigo)
- Red streaks — lines tracking away from the bite, often up a limb
- Fever or swollen lymph nodes — the infection is going systemic
- Increasing pain — infected bites hurt more each day; healing bites hurt less
These are signs of cellulitis or an infected wound, and in the tropics they escalate quickly. Antibiotics started early usually mean a simple course of tablets; antibiotics started late can mean IV treatment or a hospital stay. The Dengue Reminder Everyone Gets Wrong
Here is the fact that surprises almost every traveller: the Aedes mosquito that carries dengue bites during the day, with peaks in the early morning and late afternoon. Many visitors apply repellent only for evening drinks — which protects them from nuisance mosquitoes but not from the one that matters medically.
Practical dengue prevention in Da Nang and Hoi An:
- Use a repellent containing DEET (20–50%) or picaridin — both are sold at Vietnamese pharmacies and larger supermarkets. Apply it from the morning, and reapply after swimming or heavy sweating.
- Apply sunscreen first, repellent on top.
- Aedes mosquitoes breed in small pools of clean water — flower pot saucers, buckets on balconies. Ground-floor rooms near standing water see more of them.
- Dengue circulates year-round in central Vietnam and surges in the rainy season (roughly September to December).

Heat Rash (Prickly Heat) — Especially in Babies
Heat rash appears as clusters of tiny red or clear bumps where sweat gets trapped — neck, chest, back, skin folds, and anywhere clothing presses. Babies and young children get it fastest because their sweat ducts are immature, and parents often overdress them out of habit from cooler climates.
Treatment is about cooling, not creams:
- AC time. A few hours in an air-conditioned room daily lets the skin dry out and the rash settle — usually within two to three days.
- Loose cotton clothing. One light layer for babies. If you're comfortable in one layer, so are they.
- Cool rinses. Lukewarm-to-cool showers, then pat dry. Skip soap on the rash itself.
- Drying powder. Pharmacies sell simple talc-free drying powders; a light dusting in skin folds helps.
- Avoid thick ointments — they block sweat ducts and make it worse.

Fungal Infections: The Humidity Tax
Give a fungus warmth, moisture and skin, and it will move in. In central Vietnam that means athlete's foot (itchy, peeling skin between the toes), jock itch (a red, ring-edged rash in the groin), and ringworm (circular patches with a raised border, anywhere on the body). All three are common within the first week or two of a trip, especially for anyone living in swimwear and damp shoes.
- Buy an antifungal cream — clotrimazole or ketoconazole — over the counter at any pharmacy. Apply twice daily and continue for a week after the rash looks gone, or it comes straight back.
- Dry thoroughly between toes and in skin folds after every shower.
- Wear sandals rather than closed damp trainers; change socks daily if you must wear shoes.
- A widespread rash, a rash on the scalp, or anything not improving after two weeks of cream needs a doctor — some cases require oral antifungals.
Local Knowledge: Da Nang, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and Phong Nha
In Da Nang, the beach is the trap most people don't see coming: sandflies bite at dusk along My Khe and Non Nuoc, especially if you're sitting on the sand for sunset. Their bites are tiny but ferociously itchy for days and get scratched raw more often than mosquito bites. Cover your ankles or use repellent for sunset beach sessions. Mosquito pressure is also higher near the Han River and around the marble-carving villages at the base of the Marble Mountains, where water collects.
In Hoi An, the postcard moments carry the bite risk. The rice-paddy edges around Tra Que and Cam Thanh at sunset — exactly where every cycling tour and photo session ends up — are peak mosquito territory, and the lantern-lit Old Town sits beside the Thu Bon River. If your evening plan is paddies at golden hour followed by riverside dinner, apply repellent before you leave the hotel, wear long light trousers, and you'll enjoy both without donating blood. In Ho Chi Minh City, the pressure is urban rather than rural: shaded courtyards, stairwells and the planted areas of the residential alleys hold standing water year-round, and the canal paths in Binh Thanh and District 4 are worst at dusk. In Phong Nha, mosquitoes are the least of it once you leave the road.
